Clinical Development Program in Europe and the US
Immune-modulation company strengthens top management team following promising
Phase I/II results for its lead product, IL-7, in cancer and HIV infections
Paris, April 2, 2007 - Cytheris, a product-oriented biopharmaceutical
company focused on the research and development of new and critical agents for
immune modulation, today announced the appointment of a chief financial and a
chief medical officer. Bertrand Vannier becomes CFO and is in charge of the
company's financial and business affairs in Europe and the US. Thérèse Croughs
is named CMO and will oversee all clinical developments. In late 2006 - early
2007, Cytheris announced promising preliminary results in Phase I/II clinical
trials for its lead product, Interleukin-7. These showed an increase in T cells
in patients with cancer and patients with HIV.
"The completion of a number of clinical trials on more than 60 patients makes it
possible for Cytheris to announce a set of extremely good results in oncology
and HIV infection, and we have taken the logical step of strengthening our
management teams to ensure a smooth transition to the next stage of our
development," said Michel Morre, CEO at Cytheris. "Bertrand Vannier's in-depth
knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, coupled with Thérèse Croughs'
expertise in the medical fields which form the focus of Cytheris's activities,
will allow us to continue our international development and tackle new strategic
operations."
Vannier, 41, graduated from a French business school (Sciences-Po Paris) and
holds a degree in finance from UC Berkeley. He has 15 years experience in
auditing and corporate finance. He started his career as an auditor at Ernst &
Young and joined Vivendi Group as a financial controller. Then, as a consultant,
he conducted several IPOs on Euronext for high tech companies. From 2002, he was
CFO of Unither Pharmaceuticals, a French contract manufacturer, where he had to
work on LBO financings and acquisitions.
Croughs, 43, MD, is specialized in internal medicine. She received her MD from
the School of Medicine at the Catholic University of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium
where she served her residency. With more than 15 years experience in the
pharmaceutical industry, she has acquired a high level of medical expertise in
the fields of hematology, immunology, infectious diseases and cancer. Other
relevant expertise includes clinical development in biotechnology (rFVIII,
rFVIIa in particular) as well as regulatory affairs. She held various positions
in Bayer, NovoNordisk and more recently at BioAlliance Pharma, where she was
responsible for European medical affairs.
About Cytheris
Cytheris, Paris, is a product-oriented biopharmaceutical company focused on
the research and development of new and critical agents for immune modulation.
These drugs aim at reconstituting and enhancing the immune system of patients
suffering from cancer, chronic viral or bacterial diseases (such as HIV and HCV)
or lympho-depleting treatments (e.g. post-chemo,-BMT and -HCT).
The company's lead compound, recombinant Interleukin-7 (rIL-7) is a critical
growth factor for immune T Cell recovery and enhancement. Clinical trials
conducted on more than 60 patients in France and USA have already demonstrated
the impressive ability of rIL-7 to expand and protect CD4+ and CD8+ T cells.
A second family of products is based on highly potent NKT/dendritic cell ligands,
in-licensed from several New York universities. The product family strengthens
innate and adaptive immunity connections and will provide new immuno-therapeutic
adjuvants for cancer and chronic infectious diseases.
The company, founded in 1999, operates from Issy les Moulineaux, Paris and its
US subsidiary in Rockville (MD). It has a network of strong and active
collaborations with world-leading academic and clinical teams. Today Cytheris
employs 22 experienced people in Europe and USA. Its investors include AXA
Private Equity, Bioam Gestion, Credit Agricole Private Equity and CDC Innovation
(Paris), T2C2 Bio2000 and CDPQ (Montreal), Forbion Capital Partners (Amsterdam).
