InSecta and Moscamed announce strategic marketing partnership for Medfly
SIT
Deal will allow InSecta to market SIT medfly in the Mediterranean
and stimulate SIT control programs
March 30th 2006: InSecta Ltd and The Moscamed Commission
announced today that they have entered into a strategic agreement for
InSecta to market Moscamed’s sterile medflies around the Mediterranean.
The agreement, which allows InSecta exclusive rights in the region, is
expected to stimulate the market for Sterile Insect Technique (SIT)
control programs for Medfly.
Andrew Gardiner, Managing Director of InSecta said, “We are very
pleased to be working with Moscamed, who are unquestionably the world’s
leading producer of sterile flies. This deal not only allows InSecta to
supply our customers with Moscamed’s flies, but also gives us access to
their technical skills in implementing and supporting control programs.
Over the last few years we have developed a network of contacts around
the Mediterranean and recently have seen an increasing number of areas
looking to start using SIT. We believe that our partnership with
Moscamed will enable us to capitalise on the current opportunities and
to drive the expansion of this ecological approach to insect pest
control in the region.”
Gordon Tween, Program Director, Moscamed, said, “We believe that the
Mediterranean market represents a valuable opportunity for Moscamed. Our
partnership with InSecta gives us a chance to work with the leading
commercial company in SIT and will help us to maximise sales of our
insects in the Mediterranean.”
About InSecta. InSecta is a UK-based company with offices and
operations in London, Spain and Slovakia. InSecta is focused on the
commercial development of Medfly SIT around the Mediterranean.
About Moscamed. The Moscamed Commission is an international
commission funded by the governments of Guatemala and the United States
of America. It was established for the purpose of controlling and
eradicating Mediterranean Fruit Fly in Central America. The capacity of
Moscamed’s production facility in El Pino, Guatemala is currently more
than 4 billion sterile flies every week.
About Medfly. The Mediterranean Fruit Fly (ceratitis capitata)
is a major pest of citrus and other crops throughout the world. It is a
highly invasive pest that can cause total loss of fruit production.
About SIT. The Sterile Insect Technique is based on the
production and release of large numbers of sterile male insects that
mate with the wild females, resulting in offspring which fail to
develop. This causes the insect pest population to crash. SIT has been
successfully used for control and eradication of Medfly and other insect
pests in the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Mexico &
Chile. It has proved to be economical, environmentally sound and
sustainable over huge areas. By providing a cost-effective alternative
to chemicals it brings major economic, environmental and food-safety
benefits to producers and consumers throughout the world.
