Pharmaceutical Profiles study shaves months and millions off drug development
program
31 October 2007: Nottingham, UK: Early clinical drug development
specialist Pharmaceutical Profiles (Nottingham, UK), uses its proprietary
Enterion™ capsule technology to evaluate human drug absorption in order to
optimize oral drug bioavailability and develop modified release (MR)
formulations for new drugs.
Commenting on work recently completed at Pharmaceutical Profiles’ Nottingham HQ,
a director of one leading pharmaceutical company said: “This program was
initiated with two parallel tracks of development, MR formulation vs. metabolic
inhibition. I suspect the study allowed us to put the idea of MR formulation ‘to
bed’ approximately 6 months earlier than we would have determined in the lab.”
He continued: “I know it sounds ridiculous but, as a ballpark estimate, if you
consider our compound has the potential to be a billion dollar drug, then every
day of launch delay costs us around $3.3 million. Saving 6 months translates
into sales in the region of $600 million.”
For many pharmaceutical companies the preferred strategy for oral drug delivery
is an MR formulation that allows once-a-day dosing. This is convenient for
patients but a major challenge for drug developers. Formulations developed on in
silico predictions and in vitro profiles often fail to perform in vivo.
Pharmaceutical Profiles offers an alternative that can replace the iterative
process of ‘modify – test – modify – test’. The company’s data-driven approach,
based on human studies, streamlines the development process, saves a significant
amount of time and removes the need for certain laboratory and animal studies.
