Quantum Genomics
Corp (QGC) names Lionel Ségard CEO |
Ségard, former Chief Executive Officer of Inserm-Transfert, will lead QGC
Development of promising Drug Advances in Europe into Innovative Human
Therapeutics
Jersey City, New Jersey-June 6, 2006 - Quantum Genomics Corp (QGC), a
global biotechnology company seeking to transform the discoveries and
developments of academic research into breakthrough treatments for human
disease, announced today that it has appointed Lionel Ségard as Chief Executive
Officer.
QGC's business is identifying and developing innovative human health discovery
projects in areas where there is a significant unmet medical need. The company
intends to zero in on the many high-potential academic discoveries that never
make it beyond the academic research laboratory, and provide the know-how that
academics require to bring their discoveries to market.
QGC has already earmarked EUR 3 million to finance early stage projects. This
will enable QGC to begin the identification and selection of breakthrough
research projects in Europe, as well as to recruit a range of specialists to
provide the required management, scientific and other expertise.
"Lionel Ségard is a leading expert in sourcing, developing, and financing
innovative biotechnology projects," said Jonathan McCann, board member of QGC.
"Lionel's experience in building teams of experts from a variety of backgrounds
is a tremendous asset to QGC."
"QGC is a new type of company that has a huge growth potential," said Lionel
Ségard. "I am proud to apply my experience for the benefit of the company and to
bring products to market that would not otherwise exist. We expect to develop
new treatments not only for common diseases but also for orphan diseases. We are
already examining a number of projects and plan to start development of these
projects before year-end."
A qualified biochemist, Lionel Ségard, 38, was CEO of Inserm-Transfert, Inserm's
technology transfer arm (Inserm is the French National Institute of Health),
until March 2006. In this position, he made a major contribution to the transfer
of technology between research and industry in charge of a team which arranged
financing for twelve start-ups that raised more than EUR 80 million, created a
dedicated investment company and provided the management for more than 20
European research projects, with a total cost in excess of EUR 500 million.
He is also a founder member of France's Strategic Council for Innovation where
he was secretary general from 2003-2005. The Council's goal is to boost French
efforts in the field of research and advanced technologies and includes key
individuals from France's science, industry and financial community. Ségard
began his career at IBM as a scientist. From 1999-2002, he was CEO of the French
subsidiary of a US information technology company, 24/7 Media (NASDAQ: TFSM). In
parallel, he was co-founder of Eurobiobiz, a company that worked with the
European Commission to help create and develop European biotechnology companies
and advise investment funds.
