CONFERENCE ON BIOLOGY AND SYNCHROTRON RADIATION
|
Daresbury and Oxford, UK, 15th March 2007 – The committee of the 9th
International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation today announced
two Nobel Laureates as key note speakers for the conference, which will take
place at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, UK 13-17 August 2007
(www.bsr2007.com). Plenary speakers will examine the past, current and future
role of synchrotron radiation in biology, and applications of the technology in
structural studies. The conference will conclude with a visit and tour of the
Diamond Light Source facility in Oxford.
The opening plenary lecture of the conference, titled “Structural Biology
Revolution: Changing Face of Structural Genomics”, will be delivered by
Professor Shigeyuki Yokoyama of the Genomic Sciences Center, RIKEN Yokohama
Institute, Japan.
Professor Hartmut Michel, who was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with
colleagues Deisenhofer and Huber, will address the morning plenary session on
Tuesday August 14.
Michel is currently director of the Department of Molecular Membrane Biology at
the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics and conducts research into the mechanisms
of enzymes involved in metabolism.
Nobel Laureate Professor Johann Deisenhofer will give a special concluding
lecture on Thursday August 16 titled “Biology & SR – Current, Past and Future”.
Deisenhofer currently leads a research group, specialising in the elucidation of
three-dimensional protein structures, at the Howard Hughes Medical Center,
Dallas.
Additional plenary lectures will be given by So Iwata, Imperial College/Diamond,
UK; Malcom Irving, King’s College, UK; Venki Ramakrishnan, MRC Cambridge, UK;
Dmitri Svergun, EMBL, Germany; Tom Blundell, Cambridge, UK; David Stuart,
