Thermo Introduces the Espresso Personal Microcentrifuge

Quiet, compact and easy centrifugation for molecular biology applications

ORLANDO, FLORIDA (March 13, 2006) — Thermo Electron Corporation, the world leader in analytical instruments, today unveiled the Espresso™ personal microcentrifuge, the newest member of Thermo’s extensive centrifuge portfolio. Every aspect of the Espresso microcentrifuge has been designed for simplicity and ease of use: from its easy-to-read display to its convenient and highly accurate controls. Thermo’s history in developing innovative centrifuges has enabled the company to develop a user-friendly microcentrifuge specifically to ensure fast and safe sample separation for molecular biology applications.

The Espresso microcentrifuge design features a small footprint and very quiet operation to expedite and improve the microcentrifugation process. The large digital display is visible from both seated and standing positions. In addition, its unique 12-place rotor makes loading and unloading of 250 µl to 2.0 ml samples simple and straightforward. The highly durable non-corrosive plastic rotor enables the use of filter-based preps and is simple to remove, allowing the rotor to be fully autoclaved and cleaned using strong disinfectants. This not only makes the Espresso microcentrifuge ideal for general bench use, but also for more specific applications such as sensitive nucleic acid, protein and cell preparations.

The Espresso microcentrifuge offers fast acceleration/deceleration and 14,500 xg spin, making it ideal for basic spin-downs as well as complex protocols. The Espresso microcentrifuge features a 99 minute timer with 1 minute increments. The timer is accompanied by pulse and hold functions to maximize the range of processes. Built to high quality standards, the Espresso microcentrifuge incorporates a brush-less motor which requires virtually no maintenance.

The Espresso microcentrifuge is a cost-effective solution for individual users who need a personal unit to run specific protocols throughout the day. Its affordability also allows labs to purchase a number of microcentrifuges to accommodate dedicated processes for multiple users.

The new Espresso microcentrifuge will be showcased at Thermo booth #3733 at PITTCON® 2006, which will be held March 13-16, 2006 at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL. For more information, please visit www.thermo.com/centrifuge .
