The East Midlands Cancer Congress - 16th March 2006
Nottingham, UK, 28th
February 2006 - bioKneX, The East Midlands Bioscience
Knowledge Exchange in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, The
University of Leicester, and The University of Nottingham - is
hosting the East Midlands Cancer Congress on 16th March at BioCity in
Nottingham to showcase the Region’s strength in this area and promote
collaborations between academia and industry.
The morning of the Cancer
Congress is aimed at charities, patient groups and, as part of National
Science Week, students aged 14 and over. The morning’s activities are of
more general public interest and will present some of the latest findings on
chemoprevention, drug discovery, clinical trials and palliative care.
The afternoon symposium, aimed
at academics and industry scientists, will include talks on chemoprevention,
diagnostics, radiation studies, proteomics, drug development and imaging.
SME spin-outs with an interest in oncology will also be presenting.
There will be a research poster
competition, with a prize of a contribution towards attendance at an
international conference of the winner’s choice. A key theme of the Congress
is better collaboration. To acknowledge this, details of the Cancer
Congress Pump Priming Prize will be announced. The prize will be for the
winning innovative, inter-disciplinary collaboration proposal in the area of
oncology.
An early evening reception
and dinner will include an after-dinner speech by Professor Karrar A Khan, a
Pharmaceutical Scientist of international repute who is a visiting professor
at De Montfort University. Professor Khan has spent over 34 years in
Research and Development with some major UK Pharmaceutical companies (with
