National Science Week: 'The Body - Inside Out' on 14th March

March 2006 – bioKneX and BioCity
Nottingham present, as part of National Science Week, ‘The
Body – Inside Out’ on 14th March. The day will
comprise demonstrations and activities to inspire school pupils with
bioscience through involvement in an interactive programme of events. This
will include hands-on activities, photo displays, DNA workshops, and
presentations by scientists from the commercial and academic bioscience
community.
Designed to complement the school syllabus, pupils will investigate and learn about the human body through activities, challenges and demonstrations. An exhibition includes the Novartis/Daily Telegraph ‘Visions of Science’ photographic display of fascinating images from science and nature that will capture the imagination and foster interest in bioscience.
Presentations will be given by
scientists from BioCity Nottingham and local Universities including
Nottingham Trent University, the University of Nottingham and the University
of Leicester and a broad range of bioscience topics including: “A Day in the
Life of a Professor of Bacterial Genetics”, “Stem Cells”, “History of
Anatomy”, “DNA” and “The Colours of Bioscience”.
Pupils will also be
participating in DNA workshops in the brand new bioKneX Bioscience Education
Lab, a high specification educational facility at BioCity. In addition, the
afternoon has a careers focus where pupils will be able to meet scientists
from a broad range of professions within the bioscience field.
The day’s activities are split
into two sessions for 150 students per session, age 11-14 (10.00 -12.00 am)
and 14-16 (1.00-3.00 pm) and tailored to the Key Stage 3 and 4 programme
respectively .
