Implant-Based Dental Reconstruction: The Worldwide Implant and Bone Graft Market
In the industrial world, over 240 million people lack one or more teeth. It is estimated that 40% of the western population is missing one tooth or more. In the United States, approximately 10% is the population is totally edentulous, and every year about two million Americans loose a tooth due to sporting accidents. Although the success of modern dentistry in the United States has vastly decreased the edentulous rate in each succeeding generation, it is estimated there are about 9 million edentulous patients over the age of 65.
The traditional method of replacing a tooth has been with a dental bridge, which consists of a pontic (a filler tooth) that is attached to two surrounding crowns (abutments), has been shown to be problematic, and newer more permanent solutions are badly needed.
One of the most important developments in modern dentistry has been permanent tooth replacement with dental implants. Dental implants are titanium replacements for dental roots, which when implanted in a patients jawbone integrate with the jawbone through the process of osteointegration providing a permanent replacement for the natural tooth root.
In addition, bone grafting and regeneration techniques have radically expanded the possibilities for implant-based restorative dentistry. These techniques are making it possible to expand the candidate pool for implants to include a sizable population of edentulous patients who were poor candidates for dental implantation due to severe bone resorption.
With a rapidly aging population trend in the developed world and the resulting enormous unmet need for replacement teeth, a large number of companies see the opportunity to move into these sophisticated dental techniques. In this report, Kalorama provides the complete analysis of the growing dental implant market worldwide, focusing on implant devices and abutments and dental bone grafts.
In addition to historical market size and growth rates for these new products since 2001, the report provides forecasts through 2010, competitive market share information for the top competitors, a review of what is coming next from R&D pipelines, and recent corporate M&A maneuvering. Profiles of 15 major players is also included, along with insight into drivers and constraints within the clinical dental community and in the regulatory and reimbursement areas
