Transmembrane Transporters High Sales, High Potential as Drug Targets

Transmembrane Transporters High Sales, High Potential as Drug Targets

The transporter-targeted drug market is forecast to reach $153.8 billion in 2010 and more than 100 transporter drug targets are under commercial investigation.

Transporters represent a highly druggable class of targets and are addressed by many successful drugs on the market. Of the 957 or so human transporter genes, around 10 percent are being targeted for therapeutic effects, which leaves a large number of potential targets unexplored. As additional transporters are characterized and their structures are elucidated competition in this field is likely to increase.

Report Overview

D&MD's Transmembrane Transporters: High Sales, High Potential as Drug Targets maket report comprehensively reviews transmembrane transporters (including ion channels) and assesses their importance as drug targets. Data presented in this report demonstrates that among the top 100 best-selling drugs in the US in 2004, transporters represent the most abundant class of targets. This report will guide readers assessing or reassessing their strategies with respect to this target class.

An on-line survey conducted specially for this report shows that transporters (alongside protein kinases), are regarded as commercially the most promising targets available to the drug industry. Although much has been learned about transporters as drug targets, it is only very recently that scientists have been able to directly examine three-dimensional ion channel and other integral membrane transporter structures.

As the number of published transporter structures multiply, the opportunities to develop more specific transporter-targeting drugs will increase. Companies need to prepare themselves to exploit these opportunities.

In reviewing individual transporter targets in this report we have adopted a gene family-based approach, whereby each transporter is discussed within the context of the family to which it belongs. A comprehensive survey of the Pharmaprojects database provided information on drugs targeting over 100 transporters. This information is utilized in the discussion of transporter members of individual families, thus allowing transporter families to be analyzed from a commercial perspective.
