APC stands for adenomatous polyposis coli, a form of colorectal cancer and is a tumour suppressor. When APC it mutated, it can cause this particular type of colorectal cancer. When not present in its correct form, APC is correlated with increased risk of chromosomal disjunction because APC is located on kinetochores. This can cause patients to become susceptible to multiple polyps in the colon.
The disease caused by APC mutations is due to the fact that APC regulates myc (link to myc topic) via B-cat,a beta-catenin protein.
But the actions of APC are not just limited to the gut. However, the focus of APC research is on colorectal cancers.
