APC stands for adenomatous polyposis coli, a form of colorectal cancer and is a tumour suppressor - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
APC stands for adenomatous polyposis coli, a form of colorectal cancer and is a tumour suppressor. When APC it mutated, it can cause this particular type of colorectal cancer. When not present in its correct form, APC is correlated with increased risk of chromosomal disjunction because APC is located on kinetochores. This can cause patients to become susceptible to multiple polyps in the colon.
The disease caused by APC mutations is due to the fact that APC regulates myc (link to myc topic) via B-cat,a beta-catenin protein.
But the actions of APC are not just limited to the gut. Research suggests that APC is involved in the assembly of receptors in the nervous system that respond to nicotinic acetylcholine neurotransmitter. http://www.bioportfolio.com/resources/pmarticle/141793/Evidence-For-The-Involvement-Of-Adenomatous-Polyposis-Coli-apc-Protein-In-Maintaining.html
However, the focus of APC research is on colorectal cancers. Strong genetic familial links (http://www.bioportfolio.com/resources/pmarticle/307050/Going-Against-The-Tide-Increasing-Incidence-Of-Colorectal-Cancer-Among-Koreans-Filipinos.html) have helped researchers to target APC mutations. Drugs and genetic modulations (http://www.bioportfolio.com/resources/pmarticle/341948/Restoration-Of-Full-length-Apc-Protein-In-Sw480-Colon-Cancer-Cells-Induces.html) to mimic the apoptotic downstream effects of APC which are lost in mutated genotypes and disease phenotypes (http://www.bioportfolio.com/resources/pmarticle/199928/Genotype-phenotype-Correlation-In-Colorectal-Polyposis.html) are a good therapeutic option.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Intestinal Polyposis
The growth of INTESTINAL POLYPS. Growth processes include neoplastic (ADENOMA and CARCINOMA) and non-neoplastic (hyperplastic, mucosal, inflammatory, and other polyps).
Escherichia Coli K12
A species of gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria belonging to the K serogroup of ESCHERICHIA COLI. It lives as a harmless inhabitant of the human LARGE INTESTINE and is widely used in medical and GENETIC RESEARCH.
Muts Dna Mismatch-binding Protein
A methyl-directed mismatch DNA REPAIR protein that has weak ATPASE activity. MutS was originally described in ESCHERICHIA COLI.
Recq Helicases
A family of structurally-related DNA helicases that play an essential role in the maintenance of genome integrity. RecQ helicases were originally discovered in E COLI and are highly conserved across both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Genetic mutations that result in loss of RecQ helicase activity gives rise to disorders that are associated with CANCER predisposition and premature aging.
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli
Strains of ESCHERICHIA COLI that produce or contain at least one member of either heat-labile or heat-stable ENTEROTOXINS. The organisms colonize the mucosal surface of the small intestine and elaborate their enterotoxins causing DIARRHEA. They are mainly associated with tropical and developing countries and affect susceptible travelers to those places.
