Carolina - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
Carolina, on the southeastern US coast is a hotbed for biotechnology companies.
The regional industry support organization, The North Carolina Biotechnology Center, is the oldest of its type in the world, and was established in 1984, before biotechnology was widely renown as a new industry. Since its birth, it has helped make Carolina one the top 3 states for biotech employment, and it still continues to grow faster than another other regional hotbed. The Biotechnology Center supports research, business and academic education and strategic policy throughout the state to favor the biotech industry. For example, it has the lowest state & local tax burden on businesses. The average salary of the 57,000 employees was just under $75,000 in 2008.
Of the 528 biotechnology companies in the region, 110 are contract research and testing companies, and some such as Bayer and GSK are in the top 100 pharmaceutical companies in the world (based on annual sales).
