China - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
China has the fastest growing economy in the world, and the fastest growing uptake of technology in the world. Not surprisingly, its biotechnology industry is booming. Its potential not only as a producer but also as a consumer is significant, as it has the largest population in the world. According to the 11th Five-Year Project of Bio-industry issued by National Development and Reform Commission, the industry should be worth RMB 500 billion in 2010 going on the exceed RMB 2 trillion by the end of 2020
A lot of this is based in Shanghai, where over RMB 40bn was spend on R&D in 2009, contributing significantly to the regions output. Nicknamed 'Pharmacy Valley', the Shanghai area hosts a large number of global companies.
Further support comes from the CNCBD (developed in 1983 by the Ministry of Science and Technology), which implements the state development programs in biotechnology and health. Investment in this industry is high; promoted by the Torch Program (aiming to commercialize China's new and high technologies) and the Spark Program (promoting the development of rural economy by investing in science and technology).
