India, in the Asian subcontinent is the world’s fourth largest producer of pharmaceuticals, and is thought as one of the most promising biotech markets in the world.

Several important steps have enabled this transition; reintroduction of patent protection laws for pharmaceutical products in 2005,high levels of Indian investment into their national biotechnology industry and the establishment of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in 1986 (to boost and support the industry). The DBT are using rebate on R&D, 100% foreign direct investment and excise and customs duty waiver on certain products to attract companies to the country and Venture Capitalists (VCs) are helping the start-up of many new biotech companies. In 2006-2007 the industry experienced 30% growth, and is worth billions of US dollars.

As well as many national companies, India hosts many MNC, and is proving to have a large skilled work-force for manufacturing and research. There are currently 325 companies,

The top ten biotech companies in India are listed below;

1. Biocon
2. Serum Institute of India
3. Panacea Biotec
4. Nicholas Piramal
5. Wockhadrt Limited
6. GlaxoSmithKline
