Maryland - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
Maryland, the US state on the mid-Atlantic coast, is hub of biotechnology institutions and companies. In 2005/2006 is was the 2nd best area globally for initiatives aimed at drawing and retaining biotech companies and for highest number of Biotech start-ups in the US.
With over 400 biotechnology companies located in this state, it is the third largest biotechnology hub in America. this in in part due to large investment by the state; $700 million in infrastructure and programs. In 2009 BioMaryland 2020 was established to provide strategy for $1.3 billion investment in the coming decade. Additional support comes from the The Maryland Biotechnology Investor Tax Credit, which has provided $36 million investment in 3 years for 40 entrepreneurial bioscience enterprises.
Some of the most globally renowned educational and policy institutions for the industry are based here; Johns Hopkins University, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, ranking it teh second best state for R&D.
Half of this biotechnology cluster is focused on therapeutic development, a quarter provide support to research and a quarter are concerned with gene-based diagnostics, using biologics and nanotechnology in medical devices, and developing innovative R&D technology platforms.
The 150 clinical trials for pipeline developments are mainly centered around oncology, CNS, cardiovascular, and infectious disease with a strong vaccine development expertise. Stem cells are also an area of specialty, with one of the largest US funding programs; $71.4$ from 2007-2010.
