Norway - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
The Scandinavian country of Norway hosts a leading biotechnology industry. In 2009 a $418m stimulus package was established for the industry, to ensure it could continue to grow and ride out the financial crisis of the previous year.
In addition to this, $95 million was made available in loans to the industry by Innovation Norway, and $279 million was invested by Argentum. At the time, it was the most active political move in Europe to support the industry. Research in Norway is subsidized up to 50% by the Research Council of Norway.
The main aspect of the industry is the development of novel cancer therapies, with over 50 currently in the pipeline. Aside from the high quality research academic institutions, the following companies also operate in Norway; Amgen, AstraZeneca, Baxter, GE Healthcare, GSK, Nycomed, Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis (all in the top 100 pharmaceutical companies in the world, based on annual sales.)

Hebrides
A group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean west of Scotland, comprising the Outer Hebrides and the Inner Hebrides. They were the scene of frequent incursions of Scandinavian settlers from the 6th century A.D. They were ceded to Scotland by Norway in the 13th century. The origin of the name is uncertain. It is suggested that it is the result of a miscopying of the Roman name Ebudae or Hebudae with ri for u. (From Webster's New Geographical Dictionary, 1988, p496 & Room, Brewer's Dictionary of Names, 1992, p235)
