Prevacid, the trade name for lansoprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor designed to reduce to production of acid by the stomach. It is therefore prescribed for the prevention of gastric and intestinal ulcers (if risk factors are present), erosive esophagitis and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used to treat the above, but does not provide immediate relief from heart burn.
