Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) is new psychiatric therapy; involving just a few 15-minute sessions and no drugs, discussion of feelings, or even a psychiatrist, it is described as a cognitive vaccine. It has been reported to be successful with cases of anxiety and addictions, and may in the future be used for treating alcohol abuse.
The theory behind CBM is that many psychological problems are caused by automatic, unconscious biases in thinking. In order to de-bias this attention, the patient is shown images (related to the anxiety or addiction) with additional tasks such as following dots, or reading letters incorporated into the image.
CBM still requires more large, long-term, randomized clinical trials (as if it was a drug), but the data so far looks encouraging, as an attractive alternative to CBT.

An Introduction to Bias Modification.
Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Post-concussion Syndrome
The organic and psychogenic disturbances observed after closed head injuries (HEAD INJURIES, CLOSED). Post-concussion syndrome includes subjective physical complaints (i.e. headache, dizziness), cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. These disturbances can be chronic, permanent, or late emerging.
Chromatin Assembly And Disassembly
The mechanisms effecting establishment, maintenance, and modification of that specific physical conformation of CHROMATIN determining the transcriptional accessibility or inaccessibility of the DNA.
Histone Code
The specific patterns of POST-TRANSLATIONAL PROTEIN MODIFICATION of HISTONES, i.e. histone ACETYLATION; METHYLATION; PHOSPHORYLATION; and ubiquitination, at specific amino acid residues, that are involved in assembly, maintenance, and modification of different chromatin structural states, such as EUCHROMATIN and HETEROCHROMATIN.
Aryldialkylphosphatase
An enzyme which catalyzes the hydrolysis of an aryl-dialkyl phosphate to form dialkyl phosphate and an aryl alcohol. It can hydrolyze a broad spectrum of organophosphate substrates and a number of aromatic carboxylic acid esters. It may also mediate an enzymatic protection of LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS against oxidative modification and the consequent series of events leading to ATHEROMA formation. The enzyme was previously regarded to be identical with Arylesterase (EC 3.1.1.2).
Epigenesis, Genetic
A genetic process by which the adult organism is realized via mechanisms that lead to the restriction in the possible fates of cells, eventually leading to their differentiated state. Mechanisms involved cause heritable changes to cells without changes to DNA sequence such as DNA METHYLATION; HISTONE modification; DNA REPLICATION TIMING; NUCLEOSOME positioning; and heterochromatization which result in selective gene expression or repression.
