Depression is a serious mental health condition, where sad feelings carry on for weeks or months and interfere with your life.

The symptoms include feeling unhappy most of the time (but may feel a little better in the evenings), loosing interest in life and can't enjoy anything, finding it harder to make decisions, not coping with things that you used to and feeling exhausted, restless and agitated. Risk factors for depression include regular heavy drinking, being female and a family history of depression.

There are many options for treating depression; lifestyle changes such as keeping busy, eating well, avoiding alcohol and drug, and getting enough sleep. Trying to find the cause is good, and can be achieved through counseling or CBT. Antidepressant medications can also help, but do not resolve the cause of the condition.

Depression has a massive impact on society, as it is so common and with some patients unable to work, suffering recurrent depressive episodes, and requiring extensive family and social support.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Long-term Synaptic Depression

A persistent activity-dependent decrease in synaptic efficacy between NEURONS. It typically occurs following repeated low-frequency afferent stimulation, but it can be induced by other methods. Long-term depression appears to play a role in MEMORY.

Receptor, Serotonin, 5-ht1a

A serotonin receptor subtype found distributed through the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM where they are involved in neuroendocrine regulation of ACTH secretion. The fact that this serotonin receptor subtype is particularly sensitive to SEROTONIN AGONISTS such as BUSPIRONE suggests its role in the modulation of ANXIETY and DEPRESSION.

Andropause

An endocrine state in men, characterized by a significant decline in the production of TESTOSTERONE; DEHYDROEPIANDROSTERONE; and other hormones such as HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE. Andropause symptoms are related to the lack of androgens including DEPRESSION, sexual dysfunction, and OSTEOPOROSIS. Andropause may also result from hormonal ablation therapy for malignant diseases.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

A technique that involves the use of electrical coils on the head to generate a brief magnetic field which reaches the CEREBRAL CORTEX. It is coupled with ELECTROMYOGRAPHY response detection to assess cortical excitability by the threshold required to induce MOTOR EVOKED POTENTIALS. This method is also used for BRAIN MAPPING, to study NEUROPHYSIOLOGY, and as a substitute for ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY for treating DEPRESSION. Induction of SEIZURES limits its clinical usage.

Lethargy

A general state of sluggishness, listless, or uninterested, with being tired, and having difficulty concentrating and doing simple tasks. It may be related to DEPRESSION or DRUG ADDICTION.
