Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease GERD - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
GERD is a condition which develops when the reflux of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms (ie at least two heartburns per week) and/or complications. Predisposing factors include dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter, hiatus hernia, lower esophageal sphincter hypotension, delayed gastric emptying, overeating and smoking.
Complications include esophagitis, ulcers, Barrett's esophagus and benign strictures. Adjusting lifestyles factors can help manage the condition; weight loss, cessation of smoking, taking small regular meals and avoiding certain foods and drugs. Pharmaceutical treatment involves antacids and alginates (for symptom relief) but there is possible surgery if the symptoms are severe.
