Orphan Diseases - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
The European Organization for Rare Diseases considers orphan diseases to be those that are rare (occur in 1 in 1500 to 1 in 2500 patients, according to US Rare Disease Act 2002 and European Commission on Public Health) and neglected (due the low financial return on the development of the drug in sales). Orphaned drugs are those designed for orphaned diseases, and because of the unfavourable economic nature of developing such a drug, they are often protected by public policy.
The most prominent orphaned diseases are Huntington’s disease, acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, ovarian cancer and pancreatic cancer.
