A sperm is the male reproductive component that fertilizes an egg. Sperm are of a surprising low quality, but additional problems can hinder reproductive efforts.

The sperm may be unable to swim strongly enough through the females reproductive tract or be able to break through the outer casing of the egg to fertilize the egg. In these cases, IVF and ICSI can be used respectively, to over come these problems. Further problems occur with sperm that are unable to be ejaculated from the mans penis, due to congenital or other obstructions of the vas deferns - IVF can overcome this too.

Genetic problems are harder to solve, and may originate from cancer therapy or congenital absence of the testes.
