Spleen Disorders - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
Located under your left lung, beneath the diaphragm, the spleen has two functions; lymphocyte production (which takes place in the white pulp) and filtration of the blood by phagocytes to remove microorganisms and old red blood cells (in the red pulp).
It is possible to live with out a spleen - it may be surgically removed in cases of severe disease. Splenic diseases can results from either an enlarged spleen (splenomegaly) or a reduced function of the spleen (asplenia). There are wide range of causes for both of these, including Sickle Cell Anemia, Leukemia or tumors. In certain trauma cases with broken ribs, the spleen may rupture, which is a medical emergency. Congenital problems can cause polysplenia. Similar to any other organ such as the brain or the heart that is well vascularised, the spleen can also suffer infarctions.
