Stem Cells - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel

23:07 EDT 18th May 2013 | BioPortfolio

Stem cells can be found in all multicellular organisms and are characterized by the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division and differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types. Stem cells are found in embryos (embryonic stem cells) and in different tissues (stem cells and progenitor cells).

Research in the stem cell field is now very active, because of the potential of these cells to produce cells of many different lineages, and the possibility that they could help regenerate diseased tissue or even organs that biologically originated from that patient, and therefore do not present an immune thereat. Therapeutic cloning is a possible treatment option for a wide number of conditions across many different disciplines in medicine.
