A stroke is a cerebrovascular accident that results in inadequate blood flow to part of the brain, starving it of oxygen and causing immediate and irreversible changes to the neurones. If affects 150,000 people a year in the UK; one every 5 minutes.
Symptoms include becoming numb, weak or paralysed on one side of the body, with possible slurred speech, blurred vision and unsteadiness. It is a medical emergency. Depending on the area of the brain affected, the resulting irreversible changes can detrimentally affect bodily functions, thought processes, and ability to learn and communicate. Recovering from a stroke takes time, and some functions may slowly be regained, but often not the their original level.
There are 2 types of stroke; Ischaemic strokes (the artery becomes blocked from an embolus or clot) and haemorrhagic strokes (a vessel bursts, and bleeds into the brain). If the symptoms are temporary, then the event may not be a full stroke but a transient ischaemic attack (TIA).
Risk factors for having a stroke include having a previous TIA, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, age, African-Caribbean ethnicity, and atherosclerosis. The research into strokes is focused on being able to regenerate the lost neurones, and to encourage patients to seek early medical treatment. There is much development into drugs to control to risk factors, which are common in western populations and risk factors for other serious diseases.

Cadasil
A familial, cerebral arteriopathy mapped to chromosome 19q12, and characterized by the presence of granular deposits in small CEREBRAL ARTERIES producing ischemic STROKE; PSEUDOBULBAR PALSY; and multiple subcortical infarcts (CEREBRAL INFARCTION). CADASIL is an acronym for Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy. CADASIL differs from BINSWANGER DISEASE by the presence of MIGRAINE WITH AURA and usually by the lack of history of arterial HYPERTENSION. (From Bradley et al, Neurology in Clinical Practice, 2000, p1146)
National Institute Of Neurological Disorders And Stroke

Alien Hand Syndrome
An apraxia characterized by the affected limb having involuntary, autonomous, and purposeful behaviors that are perceived as being controlled by an external force. Often the affected limb interferes with the actions of the normal limb. Symptoms develop from lesions in the CORPUS CALLOSUM or medial frontal cortex, stroke, infarction, and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB SYNDROME, corticobasal degeneration).

Reflex, Abdominal
Contractions of the abdominal muscles upon stimulation of the skin (superficial abdominal reflex) or tapping neighboring bony structures (deep abdominal reflex). The superficial reflex may be weak or absent, for example, after a stroke, a sign of upper (suprasegmental) motor neuron lesions.
