Pain Therapeutics Company Profile

12:39 EDT 20th September 2017 | BioPortfolio

Pain Therapeutics, Inc. is a medical research company whose mission is to develop a new generation of opioid drugs (‘narcotic painkillers’). PTI has five active INDs and is focusing its Phase II development efforts on two lead compounds:

MorViva™ - a substitute for morphine and other strong opioids, and

OxyTrex™ - a substitute for oxycodone and other moderately strong opioids

The Company has two additional drug candidates, PTI-601 and PTI-701, which are also being developed.

An opioid drug (sometimes called a ‘narcotic painkiller’) refers to any drug that is derived from the opium poppy plant. This class of drugs is widely used throughout the world to treat clinical pain. In the U.S., for example, the market for narcotic painkillers exceeded $3 billion and accounted for over 5 percent of all prescription drug sales in the year 2001.

Despite widespread clinical use of narcotic painkillers, the under-treatment of pain is a serious and growing problem. For example, according to the National Institutes of Health, over 40 million Americans are unable to find relief from their pain. Conventional narcotic painkillers have debilitating side effects that limit their usefulness at all doses. In addition, chronic use of conventional narcotic painkillers may lead to tolerance, dependence, abuse, or, very rarely, addiction. As a result, some patients prefer to suffer through pain rather than to endure the ill effects of conventional narcotic painkillers.
