| Affymetrix and Caliper Life Sciences Collaborate on Instrument Automation for Target Preparation -
Multi-Year, multi-million dollar agreement to develop and supply Sciclone and
LabChip® systems for automated target preparation and processing for GeneChip®
technology -
The
two companies will develop products that leverage Caliper's expertise in
high-throughput automation and microfluidics with Affymetrix' expertise in
microarray technology and applications. The first products are expected to be
launched later this year and will automate GeneChip microarray target
preparation steps including hybridization, washing and staining for expression
analysis. The automated system will enable a single operator to run up to 96 RNA
samples at a time, compared to the current manual rate of 20 to 24 samples. "We're
extremely pleased to partner with Caliper Life Sciences, a recognized leader in
liquid handling, automation and microfluidics, to provide robust industrial
solutions and standardization of genomics processes," said Trevor Nicholls,
Chief Commercial Officer, Global Operations at Affymetrix. "We view this as
a critical next step in our goal of industrializing microarray technology to
further increase efficiency and quality of results." Affymetrix
will market and distribute the line of automation products developed under the
multi-year agreement. Caliper will serve as an OEM provider and partner with
Affymetrix to provide installation, training and field support for these new
automated systems. "The
announcement of this agreement, just as we launch our company under the new
name, Caliper Life Sciences, is a testament to the excitement that we are
generating, and to the ability of our new management team to systematically
identify and seal important business development relationships," said Kevin
Hrusovsky, President and CEO at Caliper. "An important component of our new
company's strategy is to find key partners who will help us further propel our
laboratory automation and microfluidics technologies into the life sciences
industry. As a pioneer and leader in this industry, Affymetrix is an ideal
partner to help us achieve that goal." Future
Affymetrix/Caliper projects will focus on developing new platforms for gene
expression and DNA analysis that utilize Caliper's microfluidics technology and
expertise. About
