Human Genome Pioneer Joins AusBiotech 2004 - Unravelling the Genetic Code of Australia’s Biodiversity
Monday, 18 October 2004 AusBiotech, Australia’s
Biotechnology Organisation, is pleased to announce that Dr Craig Venter, the
man who cracked the human genetic code, will address delegates at ClubBioDiversity,
the official Satellite meeting of the AusBiotech 2004 National ‘Going
Global’ Biotechnology Conference in November.
Long since Dr Venter armed himself with a powerful set of gene-sequencing machines and unravelled the human genome years before its expected completion, today Dr Venter is turning to the enormous potential that exists in the biodiversity of our planet.
CluBioDiversity
will exemplify the wealth of Australia’s biodiversity opportunities through
a balanced program followed by site tours to highlight Queensland’s
biodiversity strengths, namely, through its picturesque rainforests,
breathtaking environment and our very own World Heritage listed Great Barrier
Reef.
"We are delighted to have Craig Venter joining our ClubBioDiversity meeting to share his experiences and current endeavours with the Australian biotechnology industry," said Dr Tony Coulepis, Executive Director, AusBiotech.
"Craig’s presence, in addition to other
significant players in the biodiversity and biotechnology fields, illustrates
the significant potential of Australia’s rich environment for discovering
and developing treatments or cures for diseases where there is an unmet
clinical need through this industry’s innovation."
Craig Venter joins a long list of impressive and
distinguished international and national speakers to AusBiotech 2004,
including Steven Burrill, Burrill & Co; Lord Sainsbury, UK Minister for
Science; Russell Howard, Maxygen; Ray Briscuso, Biotechnology Industry
Organisation (BIO); and Mel Bridges, Peptech.
Australia’s global competitiveness will be
highlighted by the attraction of over 150 international biotechnology
representatives from more than 18 countries to the Conference. New Zealand
continues to reinforce its ties with Australia with over 40 delegates
registered, along with similar missions representing the USA, UK and Taiwan.
The international participants will join over
1,200 Australian biotech representatives across the medical, devices,
agricultural, food, nanotech and service sectors, as well as over 130
exhibitors and a full program of companies presenting in the Business
Partnering and Investment Forum.
