Internationals Flock to see Best of Australian Biotech

Thursday 28 October 2004 Nearly 200 international business leaders are set to converge in Brisbane for the biggest Biotechnology Business Conference and Partnering & Investment Forum in the southern hemisphere, from 7-10 November.

Delegates from over 18 countries are travelling "down under" to learn about Australia’s biotech strengths and opportunities – the greatest number of international visitors seen for an AusBiotech Conference in Australia to-date.   Firmly on the global radar screen, the Australian industry can flaunt great strengths in areas such as environmental manufacturing, stem cells, nanobiotechnology, medical devices, biodiversity and more.

Not only are investors and business leaders interested in the Australian opportunities, but many are starting to play significant roles within the industry.   Invest Australia’s Senior Investment Commissioner for North America, Robert Hunt, said Invest Australia plans to maximise this opportunity for US firms by arranging site visits to some of the "undiscovered biotech gems", and world-class R&D facilities throughout the country.

Key plenary speaker and global merchant banker, Steven Burrill from Burrill & Co, USA heads up an outstanding list of global speakers.   Keynote speakers include:

* Steven Burrill, CEO, Burrill & Co, USA

* Ian Nisbet, CEO, Meditech Research Ltd (formerly Millennium Pharmaceuticals)

* Seizo Sumida, Managing Director, Japan Bioindustry Association

* Mel Bridges, Chairman, Peptech

* Russell Howard, CEO, Maxygen

Globally renowned Craig Venter, who mapped the human genome will join a specialist group on the issue of biodiversity and the future.
