Biomedical Photometrics Launches TISSUEscope
The first high resolution
digital imaging system to provide both brightfield and fluorescence virtual
slides in 3-D without tiling
Waterloo, ON, January 14, 2005: Biomedical Photometrics Inc. (BPI)
announces the availability of the TISSUEscope" for quickly and easily acquiring,
manipulating, and analyzing images of slide-based tissue specimens common to
pathology, cytology, hematology and related laboratory medicine fields.
With the advance of digital imaging technology of the caliber of the TISSUEscope",
slide specimen imaging is now advancing towards digital formats, allowing for
easier manipulation, analysis, annotation, storage and telepathology. The
TISSUEscope" uses BPI s patented widefield MACROscopeᆴ technology to produce a
high-resolution digital image of the entire tissue specimen in a single scan
without the time consuming process of tiling 1000 s of images. The resulting
virtual slide is stored in a single digital file, enabling low and
high-resolution images of the entire tissue specimen to be easily displayed,
manipulated, distributed and interpreted.
In addition to brightfield imaging, the TISSUEscope" has the high sensitivity
necessary to simultaneously view tissue specimens using several other contrast
mechanisms including fluorescence. Fluorescence is a growing requirement for
advanced quantitative molecular imaging needed by research pathologists for
detecting cancers and monitoring treatment. Specimen images that require
multiple contrast mechanisms that may take hours to produce with image tiling
processes can now be done with the TISSUEscope" in minutes. Further, the
confocal characteristic of the TISSUEscope" also allows for optical sectioning
and construction of 3-D virtual slides.
No other virtual microscopy imaging technology combines acquisition and
manipulation of brightfield and fluorescence images, wide field-of-view (more
than ten times that of a standard microscope), the ability to capture the entire
image in a single scan, and confocal imaging capability in one instrument.
