Capsulution NanoScience AG Federal Research Ministry supports Nanotechnology

Berlin (11th July 2002) - Berlin based Capsulution NanoScience AG has been chosen by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to receive funding from the programme "Nanobiotechnology". The aim of the funded project is the development of so-called artificial cells. The cells are intended to act as transport vessels for active compound in medicine. They will also be used as nano-scaled sensors in the field of diagnostics. The project which has received a grant totalling more than 500,000 Euro will be carried out in co-operation with the Max Planck Institute for Colloid and Surface Science at Golm near Potsdam and with the University of Leipzig.

Capsulution NanoScience develops advanced drug delivery systems based on a new set of nano- and micron-sized capsules. These capsules (20 nm to 20 µm) can be functionally designed to suit a variety of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical purposes (e.g. diagnostics, crop protection, cosmetic products, textile industry). Each capsule is adapted to provide a specific advantage in its specific field of application. Today, the Berlin based company has 16 employees. In 2001 Capsulution successfully completed its first round of financing raising around three million Euro. Investors in the company include venture capital companies like Berlin Seed Capital Fund (BSCF), the Kapitalbeteiligungsgesellschaft des Landes Brandenburg (Capital Equity Company of Brandenburg, KBB) and tbg, the Technologiebeteiligungsgesellschaft (Technology Equity Company) of the Deutsche Ausgleichsbank. Capsulution NanoScience has already entered into several co-operation agreements with industrial corporations, including one with Bayer AG in December 2001.
