Berlin (November 11, 2002) - Since October Prof. Dr. Achim Göpferich is the new member in the advisory board of the Berlin-based drug-delivery company Capsulution NanoScience AG. Göpferich is widely regarded as an expert in pharmacy and drug delivery. Currently he is the Head of the Institute of Pharmacy at the University of Regensburg and amongst other positions he also holds a residency as lecturer at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA. His appointment expands Capsulutions's high-profile scientific advisory board that so far constituted of the professors Dr. Dieter Berg (Bayer AG) and Dr. Helmuth Möhwald (Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and Interfaces).
He has published widely and has undertaken extensive research, for instance, in the fields of controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering and has frequently been awarded by, among others, several awards of the Controlled Release Society, the Phoenix-Pharmazie Science Award 2000. This year he has received the APV-Research Award for excellent achievements in the area of pharmaceutical science.
"Counselling for Capsulution is a very exciting opportunity for me both from a scientific and from a technological point of view", said Göpferich, commenting his appointment. "In addition to this, the development of new medical and pharmaceutical products on the basis of Capsulution's LBL-Technology® will yield its first fruits in the near future. Dr. Karsten Cremer, CEO of Capsulution commenting on Göpferich's appointment: "We are very satisfied to have won Prof. Dr. Achim Göpferich for participation in our scientific advisory board. His profound knowledge in the field of pharmaceutical technology and his extensive contacts in the scientific community and the industry sector make him an ideal candidate to extend our company's network to maintain the positive future corporate development of
Capsulution."
About Capsulution NanoScience AG:
Capsulution NanoScience develops innovative drug delivery systems for the simple, efficient and safe delivery of pharmaceutically active compounds. The company applies the so-called LBL-Technology® to build-up the walls of nano and micro-capsules in a layer-by-layer fashion. Based on their minute size, their functionality and their highly reproducible production process the capsules can be used for a multitude of different applications. Accordingly, the precisely sized capsules (100 nm to 100 µm) can be made to function in a manner to suit the intended application, and can be given the appropriate biochemical, electrical, optical and magnetic properties as required by the customer. The capsules are already applied for the delivery of drugs, in cosmetic products, in diagnostics, and for crop protection. Today, the Berlin-based company has 17 employees. In 2001 Capsulution successfully completed its first round of financing raising around three million Euro. Investors in the company include venture capital companies like Berlin Seed Capital Fund (BSCF) and tbg, the Technologiebeteiligungsgesellschaft (Technology Equity Company) of the Deutsche Ausgleichsbank. Capsulution has already entered into several co-operation agreements with industrial corporations, including one with Bayer AG in December 2001.
