Capsulution NanoScience AG Patented Technology for Innovative Drug-Delivery
Berlin (December 10, 2002) - The Berlin-based company Capsulution NanoScience AG, a specialist for the development of innovative drug-delivery systems, indicates the grant of several international patents. One patent grants protection on the US market and two patents have been granted by the European Patent Office, Munich. These fundamental patents cover the manufacture of novel nano- and micro-capsules by means of the so-called Layer-by-Layer-Technology (LBL-Technology®).
One of the patents granted covers the encapsulation of micro-crystalline substances such as pharmaceutical compounds. Protection has also been granted for the production of nano- and micro-capsules with walls that contain nanoparticles. This technology is of particular importance in the production of magnetic capsules intended for diagnostic applications.
For Capsulution these are important patents from several patent families that had been exclusively licensed-in for worldwide marketing from Garching Innovation GmbH - the Technology Transfer Office of the Max-Planck-Society. Additionally, during this year Capsulution has filed another three patent applications for newly developed applications of the LBL-Technology®. Dr. Karsten Cremer, CEO said: "The granted patents will considerably contribute to the development and strengthening of our market position as one of the leading developers of nano- and microcapsules intended for high-end applications like drug delivery and diagnostics. During the next year our company is planning several further developments of our technology for which we will seek appropriate protection in due course."
About Capsulution NanoScience AG:
Capsulution NanoScience develops innovative drug-delivery systems for the simple, efficient and safe delivery of pharmaceutically active compounds. The company applies the so-called LBL-Technology® to build-up the walls of nano- and micro-capsules in a layer-by-layer fashion. This technology is a high-tech tool for the creation of nano- and micro-sized capsules. Based on their minute size, their functionality and their highly reproducible production process the capsules can be used for a multitude of different applications. Accordingly, the precisely sized capsules (100 nm to 100 µm) can be made to function in a manner to suit the intended application, and can be given the appropriate biochemical, electrical, optical and magnetic properties as required by the customer. The capsules are already applied for the delivery of drugs, in cosmetic products, in diagnostics, and for crop protection. Today, the Berlin-based company has 17 employees. In 2001 Capsulution successfully completed its first round of financing raising around three million Euro. Investors in the company include venture capital companies like Berlin Seed Capital Fund (BSCF), and tbg, the Technologiebeteiligungsgesellschaft (Technology Equity Company) of the Deutsche Ausgleichsbank. Capsulution has already entered into several co-operation agreements with industrial corporations, including one with Bayer AG in December 2001.
