Bridgeport,
Connecticut, USA (November 13, 1987)…. Catachem, Inc. (Catachem, Private) announced
today that it has received 510k clearance from the United States Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for the Albumin [BCG] (ALB) in vitro diagnostic chemistry reagent kit. Measurements
of Albumin (ALB) are used primarily for diagnosing liver and kidney diseases, as
well as for monitoring the causes and treatments.
Human blood serum contains large amounts of protein. Two major groups of
proteins in blood serum are albumin and globulin. A total serum protein test measures the total amount of
protein in blood serum as well as the amounts of albumin and globulin. The
amounts of albumin and globulin can help a doctor diagnose certain diseases. Albumin
is produced mainly in the liver. It helps keep the blood from leaking out of
blood vessels. When albumin levels drop, fluid may collect in the ankles (pedal
edema), lungs (pulmonary edema), or abdomen (ascites). Albumin also helps carry
some medications and other substances through the blood and is important for
tissue growth and healing.
This test is done on a blood sample taken from a vein.
BCG dye at a pH of 4.2
and in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant Brij-35 specifically binds albumin
to form a colored BCG-albumin complex with maximum absorbance at 630 nm.
The increase in absorbance is directly proportional to the albumin
concentration present in the sample. ALB is a one reagent
chemistry available in two sizes. Reagents
are packaged ready-to-use in small glass bottles. Calibrator and controls are
available separately. ALB C244-01 1x500 ML, ALB C242-01 4x500 ML. About
