Bridgeport,
Connecticut, USA (December 8, 1987)…. Catachem, Inc. (Catachem, Private)
announced today that it has received 510k clearance from the United States Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Total Protein (TP) in vitro diagnostic chemistry
reagent kit. Measurements of Total
Protein (TP) activity are primarily used for diagnosing dehydration,
malignancies, cirrhosis, malnutrition, and vitamin deficiencies, as well as for
monitoring the causes and treatments. Blood serum contains large amounts of
protein. Two major groups of proteins in blood serum are albumin and globulin. A
total serum protein test measures the total amount of protein in blood serum as
well as the amounts of albumin and globulin. This test is done on a blood sample
taken from a vein. To determine TP, a serum sample is mixed
with the biuret reagent. The
carboxyl (-C=0) and imine (=N-N) groups of the peptide bond present in the
protein molecular structure react with the copper ions under alkaline conditions
to form a colored chelate complex. The
intensity of the color produced is read at 550 nm and it is directly proprtional
to the total protein concentration in the serum sample. TP is a two reagent chemistry R1 is available in
two sizes and R2 is available in one size.
Reagents are packaged ready-to-use in small glass bottles. Calibrator and
controls are available separately. TP R1 C254-01 1x500 ML, TP R1 C252-02 5x250
ML, TP R2 C252-01 4x500 ML. About
