The Consortium for Post Genome Science 2nd Conference

February 13, 2004 The Consortium for Post Genome Science, a cross-institutional initiative designed to accelerate developments in post-genome science and technology, is proud to announce that its 2nd Conference, Genome to Systems, will take place in Manchester, UK, on 1-3 September 2004 at the impressive Manchester International Convention Centre.

Following on from the successful inaugural conference in 2003, this year’s event will address many specialist areas of interest, focusing on post genomic technologies and their application to scientific, healthcare and ethical issues.  The Conference covers genomics, proteomics, informatics and the instruments and consumables to these disciplines, attracting a community of up to 800 leading researchers, biotech and pharmaceutical executives, technology transfer and service providers.

A lively programme of plenary lectures and academic sessions will be delivered by expert speakers to reflect the rapid advances in underpinning technology and their deployment in scientific and biomedical investigations.  Key speakers include, Tom Blundell (Cambridge), Denis Noble (Oxford), Ruedi Aebersold (Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle) and Stuart Kim (Stanford).  Other speakers include structural genomis specialists from RIKEN, Japan and proteomics experts from Odense, Denmark amongst many others.

This programme is complemented by an exhibition of up to 80 leading suppliers focusing on post-genome technologies and their scientific and commercial applications.  The commercial aspect of the Conference also includes showcase sessions, providing an ideal forum for 24 leading companies and institutes to meet potential customers, partners and investors to promote their research, technology, IP, products and services.

Professor Andrew Cossins, Consortium Chairman, notes, “This conference highlights the North West’s expertise in post-genome science and technology, in particular the knowledge and commercial acumen that is available in the region for the benefit of scientists, clinicians and businesses.”  Professor Cossins continued, “By bringing together industry experts, leading researchers and representatives from the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, as well as the suppliers and service providers that support these industries, we are creating an international community that will help accelerate developments in post-genome science.”

The Consortium for Post Genome Science
The Consortium was established in 2001 as a cross-institutional initiative designed to accelerate developments in post-genome science and technology for the benefit of scientists, clinicians and companies - particularly those operating in the North West of England.

Its members are carrying out four core programmes of research, each focusing on different, but complementary strategic research areas:

·         The Centre for BioArray Innovation

·         Microfluids Analytical and Screening Technology Centre

·         Centre for Integrated Genomic Medical Research

·         3rd Generation Genomics
