House Judiciary Committee on Football Head Injuries: Expert Available

Wednesday 28th of October 2009 6:30

WHAT: Today, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on
the long-term impact of head injuries suffered by players in
                the National Football League (NFL).

WHO: Dr. Julian Bailes, Professor and Chairman of the Department of
Neurosurgery at West Virginia University School of Medicine
and Co-Founder of the Brain Injury Research Institute, will
                provide witness testimony to Congress.

Dr. Bailes has conducted some of the earliest research into
the impact of recurrent concussion on long-term brain injury
among professional athletes. Throughout the 1990s, he served
as the team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers and he's
been a team physician in either the NFL or NCAA Division I for
                20 years.

Dr. Bailes is available to discuss:

-- Research showing that NFL players who had at least three
concussions during their professional careers had three
times the risk of clinical depression

-- His work alongside Institute Co-Founder Dr. Bennet Omalu,
who discovered the first clinical evidence of chronic
traumatic encephalopathy - a progressive decline in brain
                   function often due to concussion

-- His experience as a neurosurgeon, a team physician, and an
                   athlete.

WHEN: The House Judiciary Committee Hearing begins on
Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 10:00 AM EDT.
