At the end of November 2003 the joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS and the World Health Organization presented the latest figures on HIV-infection. Their conclusion was that the global AIDS epidemic still shows no signs of abating. While prevention of HIV is a main focus to finally stop the AIDS epidemic, until now no approved prevention products have reached the market. On the other hand a growing number of HIV therapeutics is since several years introduced on the market. Up to 2003 reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors were the only two product classes available on the market. Early 2003 the first fusion inhibitor entered the market. Next to these products, a growing number of drugs are under development for both HIV prevention and therapy. Categorized according to the various succeeding steps in HIV-infection this report reviews more than 100 drugs currently under development. Deals closed in 2003 for these products are highlighted.
