USC Marshall School of Business Recognizes Contributions of Founders of Asia-Pacific International Molecular Biology Network

Ken-ichi Arai of Japan and Jeongbin Yim of Korea Honored for Roles in the Development of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in Asia-Pacific

April 6, 2005 – Los Angeles, CA, – Ken-ichi Arai, M.D., of Japan and Jeongbin Yim, Ph.D., of Korea are recipients of Outstanding Achievement Awards from the Global BioBusiness Initiative of the USC Marshall School of Business.  The selection committee of the Asia-Pacific BioBusiness Leadership Awards noted the significant contributions made by Arai and Yim in promoting the development of molecular biology and biotechnology in Asia-Pacific. 

“Among other achievements, Arai and Yim co-founded the Asia-Pacific IMBN to ensure that the economies of the region would stay on the true cutting edge of developments in biotechnology,” said Carl Feldbaum, chairman of the selection committee for the Asia-Pacific BioBusiness Leadership Award and president emeritus of the U.S. Biotechnology Industry Organization.  “The Asia-Pacific IMBN has been an effective catalyst in the development of the molecular biology and biotechnology sectors in their countries and internationally.”

Ken-ichi Arai received his M.D. degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tokyo and his Ph. D. degree in Biochemistry from the Department of Chemistry, Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo.  He is president emeritus of the Asia-Pacific IMBN.  Jeongbin Yim received his B.S. in biology from Sogang University and his Ph.D. in biochemistry from M.I.T.  He is currently a professor at Seoul National University; president of the Asia-Pacific IMBN; and a director of BioMaxx. 

These Outstanding Achievement Awards are an extension of the BioBusiness Leadership Awards, sponsored by the Global BioBusiness Initiative, a program of the Center for Global Business Excellence (C-GLOBE), USC Marshall School.  The Global BioBusiness Initiative serves as an international resource dedicated to facilitating interdisciplinary leadership in the biobusiness area. 

These awards will be presented at the USC Asia-Pacific Business Outlook 2005 tomorrow.  The 18th annual executive conference on Asia trade and investment is one of the longest-running conferences about the Pacific Rim economies.
