New High-Performance Packaging Components
to Protect Drugs from Risk of Product Loss and Failures

West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. (NYSE: WST) (West),
today announced the European launch of prefilled syringe plungers with West
FluroTec barrier film and Westar®
RS processing. The FluroTec plungers can help mitigate the risk of product
loss and failures for high-value pharmaceutical and biotechnology drugs, which
are increasingly delivered via prefilled syringes in the European marketplace.
The plunger in these delivery systems is in contact with the drug throughout
its entire shelf life, necessitating compatibility between the plunger and the
drug product. West’s new FluroTec product was designed to compatibility and
other critical stability needs.
West is unveiling the West FluroTec barrier film
and Westar RS processing capabilities at the annual Interpack packaging show
in Düsseldorf, Germany, Hall 7, Booth #72 B 23 on April 21-27.
West’s FluroTec barrier film technology helps
protect drugs against organic and inorganic extractables, minimizing the
interaction between the drug and the closure and maintaining container closure
integrity. In addition, the fluorocarbon film reduces absorption and
adsorption of the drug product, an important benefit for maintaining the
potency and therefore, the shelf life of most drugs. Ready-to-sterilize
processing, Westar RS plungers can be packed to allow direct sterilization by
the customer.
