Agilent
Technologies, ALMA Honor Retired Lab Director with Distinguished Service Award
for Analytical Lab Management
PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec. 8, 2004
-- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and the Analytical Laboratory
Managers Association (ALMA) today announced that the 2004 ALMA Distinguished
Service Award for Analytical Laboratory Management has been presented to Thomas
Lyttle of Destin, Fla. Lyttle, a retired director of the analytical
instrumentation facility at Tulane University and co-founder of ALMA, was
honored for his long-term commitment and distinguished contributions to the lab
management field.
The award recognizes performance and service to the profession of analytical lab
management, and consists of a medal, $3,000 honorarium and travel allowance.
Agilent's Life Sciences and Chemical Analysis (LSCA) group sponsors the award.
In 1980, Lyttle co-founded an organization of university lab managers who met
regularly to share experiences and discuss the practical problems of lab
operation. This group soon attracted the interest of industry and government lab
managers, eventually establishing itself as ALMA. ALMA is the largest lab
management organization in the world, with more than 300 members across four
continents. Lyttle served as president of ALMA in 1982 and 1992.
"For more than three decades, Dr. Lyttle has been a strong advocate for the
development and sharing of skills and practices within the lab management
community," said Stuart Cram, worldwide business development manager for Agilent
LSCA. "We believe that good management is essential to maximizing laboratory
productivity, the production of high quality data, and the scientific
capabilities of lab workers. We congratulate Dr. Lyttle."
ALMA and Agilent presented the award Nov. 15 at the 25th Annual ALMA Conference,
held at Agilent's offices in Wilmington, Del.
