Is Your Camp Ready to Manage Campers with Food Allergies?
AllergyHome.org Introduces Free Food Allergy Management Teaching Tool for Camps. The web-based education module, endorsed by the Association of Camp Nurses (ACN) and American Camp Association (ACA) helps camps teach their staff how to care for food allergic campers.
Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 19, 2012
Any camp caring for campers with food allergies will need to know how to manage food allergies. AllergyHome.org, a provider of internet based food allergy education, has created Camps.AllergyHome.org, dedicated to training camp staff about food allergies. The site features a free online food allergy education module, Management of Food Allergies in Camps – What Staff Need to Know (1.0 CEC), which is now available to assist camps in training their staff and preparing for campers with food allergies.
Every year, families send their children with food allergies to summer camps and place their trust in the camp staff to safely care for them. A misstep in dealing with food allergies can lead to catastrophic consequences. Any camp with food allergic campers needs to have policies in place for managing food allergies and anaphylaxis (severe life threatening allergic reactions). Parents and camps need to ensure that strategies to prevent allergic reactions and to prepare for allergic emergencies are solidly in place.
To help with these goals, a module has been created in consultation with the Association of Camp Nurses and has been educationally endorsed by the American Camp Association. Upon completion of the module and completion of a quiz staff can collect free educational credits (1.0 CECs) through the American Camp Association. See a recent interview with American Camp Association New England. Along with this training tool, there are additional resources to increase food allergy awareness in the camp community found at Camps.AllergyHome.org.
In addition to the camp staff training module, Camps.AllergyHome.org has separate modules on:
- How to Use an EpiPen
- How to Read an Ingredient Label for Food Allergens
- What is a Food Allergy (Short Video for Young Children)
- Competency Test to Assess Food Allergy Knowledge
