They recently reported that gray hair starts with nutritional deficiencies in antioxidants and magnesium that set off a domino effect of critical nutrients that preserve hair color. They report that about 75% of Americans are deficient in magnesium. As a result, there is a reduction in the production of the enzymes catalase and methionine sulfoxide reductase (MSR) which fight hydroxyl and peroxyl free radicals (literally hydrogen peroxide) that bleaches hair follicles.

However, as HealthyAnswers.com reports, new research has found that L-methionine, an amino acid, helps block this free radical bleach damage to hair follicles. In addition, magnesium stimulates more production of the catalase and MSR enzymes that protect hair color.
