Update on HIV/AIDS field

12:14 EDT 28 Sep 2012 | Anya de Iongh

Although disappeared from the main headlines, HIV/AIDS continues to be a rich field of development incorporating many aspects of modern medicine, possibly most prominently public health. The public health educational challenge that still remains is signified by recent research showing faith leaders talking of ‘cures’. This presents many worries to the medical and local communities – the potential further spread and reluctance to use traditional therapies. The challenge of HIV remains large, but there is progress being made in research centres across the world;
• Testing kits remain the key to getting treatment and preventing spread by providing a diagnosis. The global market and UK markets are both significant, as these reports detail.
• A number of different therapies are being developed with fierce competition between backing companies. Even competition within companies for their own different treatments is strong (for example, Gilead’s Complera vs. Atripla)
• Vaccines are an area of significant potential, as illustrated by the competition between companies detailed in this report
