Obesity: no light-hearted problem

There are number of options for people with obesity, surgery being one. Recent research has shown that patients often do not make these important decisions abut whether to undergo surgery after enough information or consideration. The operation can have significant risks and complications so it is not something to be taken lightly (no pun intended!). What are the other possible "fixes" out there for obesity? Being a serious Western problem, significant money in spent on research in this area


It is becoming clear that the damage and risks of obesity can be established during childhood so considerable focus is now on treatment and prevention strategies in children, the details of which can be found in these PubMed reports: Pediatric Obesity Epidemic Problems and Solutions; and Childhood Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease Links and Prevention Strategies.

The compound CLA is considered to have anti-obesity properties and nutritional supplements to "cure" obesity are still much hoped for. New research has just suggested that C. Elegans could be an appropriate model for testing these new compounds and supplements.

The pipeline for obesity treatments are considerable, but few products however gave widely been deemed successful! The pipelines are detailed in this report.

There are considerable number of clinical trials ongoing across the world, however the main focus is in western nations and the BRIC nations, which are detailed in this report.

Bariatric surgery, the under considered treatment many choose is detailed here, and highlights the importance of proper informed and thoughtful decision making on the issue.
