May 20, 2003 Preclinical data presented at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) meeting support MedImmune (NASDAQ: MEDI) and Genaera’s (NASDAQ: GENR) plans to advance an anti-interleukin-9 (IL-9) monoclonal antibody into clinical trials for the prevention and treatment of allergic asthma. Preclinical studies of various candidate constructs are ongoing at MedImmune. MedImmune plans to initiate clinical trials of the lead construct in the second half of 2003. The biochemical role of IL-9 in airway hyperresponsiveness suggests that development should not be limited to asthma management, but should be considered for development in the management of other disorders of reactive airways, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis.
Monday’s ATS presentation described a mouse model in which systemic administration of an anti-Il-9 monoclonal antibody conferred significant 28-day clinical advantages compared to controls in terms of airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophil accumulation in bronchial washings, IL-13 levels in bronchial washings, and lung IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 mRNA levels as measured by real-time PCR. Additional compelling data validated the biochemical and translational merits of this approach to the management of hyperresponsive airways.
