January 07, 2003 BiotechTracker has launched its profile of Amgen, which includes profiles of 14 lead and 6 partnered drugs.

Enbrel should experience strong sales growth due to an alleviation of supply constraints, expansion into psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis, and future approval of once-weekly dosing. The passage of a Medicare prescription drug benefit would also be a significant positive for Enbrel sales. While Humira, which was recently approved, is superior to Enbrel regarding convenience of administration, Humira data suggest that it is not clinically superior to Enbrel. The overwhelming majority of physicians, both with whom we have spoken and who have made public commentary on the issue, are unlikely to switch patients from Enbrel to Humira in the near term. 

We expect Aranesp sales to reach $1.8 billion by 2007 for oncology indications alone. Especially in Europe, Aranesp will be able to compete favorably with Johnson & Johnson’s Procrit / Eprex. We also expect market expansion for Aranesp for anemia related to chronic disease and HIV. 

Sales of Neulasta and Neupogen will benefit from a successful marketing program designed to increase physician and patient awareness of appropriate circumstances for their use. Neupogen / Neulasta sales will also benefit from validation of a recent study showing the survival benefits of well-tolerated, more frequent chemotherapy for cancer patients also receiving Neupogen. 

Amgen will benefit from the release of positive pipeline data in 2003, including phase II/III data for Enbrel use in psoriasis, AMG-073 phase III data in secondary hyperparathydroidism, phase III data for rHuKGF in oral mucositis, and phase II data for ABX-EGF.
