Biotech Tracker News - Meta-Analysis Demonstrates Angiomax Benefit for Patients with Renal Impairment

April 03, 2003. A presentation at the American College of Cardiology meeting solidifies The Medicines Company’s (NASDAQ: MDCO) Angiomax (bivalirudin) as a consideration for use in renally impaired patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Angiomax provided clinically significant risk reduction for both ischemic and bleeding adversities.

Chronic kidney disease increases the risk for both ischemic and bleeding adversities during PCI. In order to assess the magnitude of Angiomax risk reduction for patients stratified by renal function, the investigators performed a meta-analysis of three randomized trials (BAT, REPLACE-1 and CACHET) comparing Angiomax with heparin during PCI. 5,035 study subjects were included in the meta-analysis.

The worse patients’ renal impairment, the more prone they were to the relevant adversities. Ischemic and bleeding event rates increased with renal function. The relative benefit of Angiomax versus heparin with respect to both ischemic and bleeding events was maintained across the various strata assessed. Angiomax’s benefit in terms of absolute risk reduction increased with declining renal function.
