GLAXOSMITHKLINE ENGAGES BIOWISDOM IN SECOND AGREEMENT FOR ONTOLOGY
(25th November 2003, Cambridge, UK) BioWisdom, the world leader in Ontology today announces that it has entered into a long-term, non-exclusive agreement with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The three-year agreement extends the scope of an existing 18-month collaboration between the two companies.
GSK will import components of BioWisdom’s ontologies into its internal thesaurus. By sourcing ontologies externally in this way, GSK increases its productivity and gains a rapid, scalable and cost-effective method of building a comprehensive thesaurus. Under the terms of the agreement, BioWisdom will also provide consultancy to GSK in areas related to the development of ontology-based applications that improve productivity in drug discovery and development, and support knowledge re-use.
Gordon Smith Baxter, CEO of BioWisdom, commenting on the agreement said, "The collaboration announced today provides important customer validation of the quality of our ontology products and our expertise in this arena.”

ABOUT ONTOLOGY
Ontology is a branch of science that deals with knowledge capture and representation. BioWisdom’s approach involves the development of specialized knowledgebases (ontologies) and the software tools for managing them. Ontologies can be used to enhance information retrieval and specialized text-mining systems, for annotation of databases, or as tools to facilitate discovery and decision-making. Ontologies can also be used to dramatically improve the visibility of knowledge resources within large and complex organizations.
