BMD brings remote clinical
testing to French hospital
Integrated solution means fast results, complete biological control and traceability
Paris, September 2 2002 BMD, European specialist in advanced diagnostics, announces today the introduction of a pilot scheme for remote medical testing at the cardiology unit of Arras Hospital. Remote testing has long been sought after by emergency units in hospitals and has been implemented in Arras using BMDıs expertise in in-vitro diagnostics and software architecture. The system will improve the way in which urgent cases are treated in the emergency room and will enable physicians to make vital cardiological diagnoses with increased accuracy.
Using the new system, clinicians carry out tests at the point-of-care and send test results over the internet to be analyzed in the laboratory. Once checked out by the lab, the lab then immediately sends its results back to the clinicians. Typical total turnaround time is around fifteen minutes. The system rapidly identifies signs of a heart attack or heart failure, thus considerably reducing the risk of death.
The new system also ensures that information gained from the tests is added to the patientıs medical file and so remains easily accessible for the duration the patientıs stay in hospital. BMD selected the Triage[R] Meter System, developed by BIOSITE[R] and marketed by BMD, for use in the new system. The company expects the new facility will put an end to current methods of testing that prove both traumatic for the patient and costly to healthcare providers in terms of time and money. Quality of service and patient confidentiality are paramount. The system has built-in safeguards and will shut down if the pre-established protocols are breached.
The Triage[R] Meter System not only provides a solution for cardiologists in the emergency room by dramatically reducing the time taken to make diagnoses but it also satisfies the stringent requirements of biologists who have complete control over the information.
³This new approach to clinical testing not only offers major benefits to emergency services in France and other countries where BMD operates. It creates an opportunity for BMD to work with many laboratories and hospitals where there is a need and desire to benefit from this technological advance,² said Daniel Pierron, Chairman and CEO of BMD. ³We believe our achievements in bringing together miniaturization and computing technology will open up significant markets in the short and medium term for BMD.² As an example, BMD expects the new timesaving devices will be deployed in ambulances or other emergency vehicles in due course.
³The results of our collaboration with BMD are extremely significant for cardiology units and emergency rooms,² said Dr. Anne Gruson, laboratory Director at Arras Hospital. ³Everyone taking part in the project has performed with the highest professionalism. This and BMDıs commitment in responding exactly to our requirements contributed greatly to the success of the project.²
About BMD
BMD (Biomedical Diagnostics) develops and markets advanced biological diagnostic tools for the medical professions. The company boasts a unique combination of experience, knowledge and understanding of the biological diagnostics field. Founded in 1986, the company initially concentrated on building a profitable product distribution business. Increasing knowledge and understanding of the market led the company to establish research and development activities of its own, and today BMD offers its own products to the medical sector. BMD now holds a leading position in the diagnostics market, offering a wide range of solutions in the fields of autoimmune diseases, allergies, and infectious diseases. BMD also offers immunochemical tests for diagnosing heart failure and other coronary problems. As well as the development of its own products, BMD is involved in the manufacture of products for other international distributors.
